This paper presents a new high order numerical method based on multi-moment idea developed by the CIP (Constrained Interpolation Profile) method, that is named the multi-moment constrained finite volume (MCV) method. In the MCV method, the locally defined point-values as the unknowns are updated respectively. Then, each of the time evolution equations in terms of the point-values are obtained from some kinds of moments such as the cell-averaged value, point-value and derivative value. Therefore, the MCV method is able to satisfy the mass conservation completely. In this paper, the method is extended to the incompressible fluid equations.

A numerical model for flud simulations in the presence of solid bodies of complex geometry has been developed by combining the immersed boundary method and the CIP/multi-moment finite volume method. The CIP/multi-moment finite volume method, so called VSIAM3, provides a suitable framework for accommodating the immersed boundary method. The resulting model is quite computationally efficient and robust. Numerical tests have been carried out to validate the proposed model.

We propose a high-order finite volume method based on multi-moment, namely constrained interpolation profile/multi-moment finite volume method (CIP/MM FVM), on the icosahedral spherical grid. In this method, two kinds of moments are defined as model variables on physical field, for example the point value (PV) and the volume-integrated average (VIA), and updated independently in time. Therefore, a CIP/MM FVM appears to be more attractive regarding the stability and flexibility in comparison with other conventional single-moment finite volume methods that use only the VIA as the model variable. The icosahedral spherical grid has a significant advantage of grid uniformity. We have developed a CIP/MM FVM formulations for the advection equation and the shallow-water equations on the sphere, and carried out some numerical experiments to varify the numerical schemes.

We propose a conservative scheme that suppresses numerical oscillation on triangular unstructured grids. We use "multi-moment" that is one of the features of the CIP method. Three types of so-called "moments", defined as the volume-integrated average (VIA), the point value (PV) and surface-integrated average (SIA) of physical field are used as the prognostic variables to be carried forward in time separately. VIA is updated by a flux formulation, and PV and SIA are updated by a semi-Lagrangian scheme. A 2D quadratic polynomial can be construction over a single triangular element. Numerical oscillation is suppressed by limiting the gradient of a polynomial. Shallow water equation is solved by using Method of Characteristics that is suitable for semi-Lagrangian method. The time-integrated average of flux for updating VIA is approximated by the trajectory-integrated average of Riemann invariant. The proposed method has little numerical oscillation and appears to be robust to different numerical grids by some numerical tests.

In this paper, we introduce the multi-block method to the CIP/Multi-Moment Finite Volume Method (CIP/MM-FVM) to make the numerical model more flexible and more efficient in the presence of complex geometry. Because the stencil required for the reconstruction in the CIP/MM-FVM is compact, the halo region for the block boundary is of only one grid spacing. The accuracy and the conservatively of the original CIP/MM-FVM is maintained by imposing proper conditions at the common boundary of two different blocks. Numerical experiments have been carried out to verify the proposed method.

This paper presents rational function based fully multi-dimensional advection schemes for structured and unstructured grids of a quadrilateral geometry. For the structured grid, a fully 2D rational interpolation function is constructed by combining two 1D sweeps based on the 1D rational function with 3 degrees of freedoms, and is convexity preserving. For the unstructured, the interpolation function is constructed according to the same procedure as in the structured grid after each control volume is mapped to a rectangle. Numerical tests of advection transport show that the constructed rational interpolation functions effectively eliminate the numerical oscillations and give well-regulated solutions.

We propose a 4th-order conservative scheme for transport equation on triangular unstructured grids based on the underlying concept of the CIP method. Two types of so-called "moments", defined as the volume integrated average (VIA) and the point value (PV) of physical field are used as the prognostic variables to be carried forward in time separately. VIA is updated by a flux formulation, and PVs are updated by a semi-Lagrangian scheme. A 2D cubic polynomial can be construction over a single triangular element. The 4^<th>-order accuracy of the numerical scheme is verified by numerical tests. The proposed method appears to be very robust to different unstructured grids.

The underlying idea of the CIP method provides a general concept that one can make use of more than one model variables, so called "moments", for a contain physical field in constructing numerical approximations. Different from those used in the conventional discretizations, such as the finite difference method or the finite volume method, a multi moment interpolation gives some new numerical properties in the accuracy of numerical approximations. Furthermore, treating multi moments as the model variables substantially improves numerical dispersions for wave equations. Some related topics are presented in this talk.

This paper reports the development of a CFD code for multi-fluid simulations with a momentum equation solver using two integral moments, which are called VSIA (Volume/Surface Integrated Average), and a front-capturing scheme, namely STAA (Surface Tracking by Artificial Anti-diffusion) method. In the dynamical solver, CIP-CSL advection scheme is used for all the prognostic variables. In STAA method, the diffused VOF function is corrected with an artificial flux. A projection methods is devised on a collocate grid. Our numerical tests show that the combination of VSIAM3 (VSIA Multi Moment Method) and STAA indicates good conservation of momentum and volume of fluid.

We have succeeded for the first time to simulate dynamic phase transition from metal to vapor. This success is due to the CIP (Cubic-Interporated Pseudoparticle/Propagation) method that can treat solid, liquid and gas together and can trace a sharp interface with almost one grid. The strategy of the CIP method and its various modifications are reviewed including application to various aspects of multi-phase flow such as laser-induced evaporation, slamming of ship and formation of milk crown in three dimensions.

High performance numerical models play an essential role in accessing and predicting natural disasters and environmental hazards in earth's atmosphere. We, under this research project, carried out some fundamental studies concerning the key issues in constructing numerical models for atmospheric dynamics with high accuracy, efficiency and robustness. Our major achievements are as follows.
1)We have proposed a unified numerical procedure for both compressible and incompressible flows using the CIP/multi-moment finite volume framework. The model eliminates all the singularities for Mach number ranging from zero to infinite and possesses rigorously the numerical conservativeness.
    2) A new grid based on the multi-moment concept, so called "M-grid", has been devised. Theoretical analysis and numerical experiments show that the M-grid has better numerical dispersion than any Arakawa-type finite difference grid for all grid resolutions.
3)We have built a numerical model for direct simulation of the interactions between air and water of micro-scale flows. The air/water interface is explicitly resolved by an interface capturing method we developed recently. The numerical model has been parallelized and tuned on Earth Simulator and other supercomputer platforms.
4)The numerical formulations on unstructured meshes have been developed to deal with the geometrical complexity in topography. We obtained 4^<th>-order accuracy on triangular unstructured mesh.
5)Toward the implementation in the spherical geometry and the global model, we have constructed several accurate and robust numerical formulations using three new-type global grids, i.e. the Yin-Yang grid, the gnomonic cubic grid and the icosahedral grid. The complete conservativeness of the Yin-Yang grid was obtained by including a flux modification across the overset boundaries. All prototype models on different spherical grids are verified with numerical benchmark tests and found promising.

Fluid-structure interaction problems are still unknown phenomena and it is highly expected to study them by numerical simulations. In this study, the class library of C++ programming language was developed to analyze fluid-structure interaction problems. The library consists of fluid-simulation class with sophisticated numerical method, structure-analysis class, fluid-structure coupling class, grid generation class, parallel computing class, and visualization class. By combining these classes depending on the problems, numerical simulation codes are easily constructed.
In the fluid-simulation class, high-accurate numerical method was developed and the stable coupling method on the collocated grid was proposed in which easily introduces fluid-structure interaction. This method is also easily applicable to parallel computing and the explosion simulation was executed by 2000 CPU of a PC-Cluster system. In the AMR sub-class, it is possible to refine the mesh of the tree-data structure with third-order spatial accuracy. It is found that the overset grid sub-class is quit effective for rigid body of transform and rotational motion in fluid. The torque of the wind turbine was studied with using this sub-class. We developed the sub-class of Immersed boundary method which makes it possible to treat complex shapes on Cartesian grid. The sub-class of Distinct Element Method was used to study destruction of the structure with mass-spring model. The sub-class of photo-realistic rendering could visualize the bubbly flow and meso-scale typhoon simulation and made high-quality animations by using POV-Ray software. These ware highly evaluated.
