    The "Innovative Combustion Technology" program, a national project is established under the Cabinet Office, Government of Japan as a part of the" Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP)". The "Gasoline Combustion Team" is one of teams of the "Innovative Combustion Technology" program.

    The "Gasoline Combustion Team" is comprised of Keio University as a Leader university and 29 universities as a Cluster university. Upon agreement with the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), we have been conducting the research on the "Super-Lean Burn for Gasoline Engines" with a support of the Research Association of Automotive Internal Combustion Engines (AICE) under the strong industry, academia and government collaboration.

    This paper introduces both scientific and technological approaches to innovative combustion technologies to realize the "Super- Lean Low Temperature Combustion", targeting a thermal efficiency of 50%.

    A new method of quantitative measurement of fuel vapor concentration in transient evaporating sprays is described. TMPD, a fluorescence dopant, was doped in n-tridecane fuel, and the blended fuel was injected into high-temperature and high-pressure nitrogen to form an evaporating spray. A sheet of laser light from a pulsed Nd : YAG laser illuminated a cross section of the evaporated spray to induce a fluorescence emission from TMPD vapor in the spray. The laser-induced fluorescence image taken from a direction perpendicular to the illuminated plane was analyzed based on a detailed calibration concentration conducted at high-temperature and high-pressure conditions and an assumption of the thermal equilibrium state for fuel vapor and nitrogen mixture. The quantitative fuel vapor concentration distribution at an instant in an evaporating spray was thus obtained by the analysis, and its accuracy was proved satisfactory through a comparison of the mass of fuel vapor integrated over the entire spray and the mass of injected fuel.

    The mixing process in an unsteady two-dimensional jet issued into quiescent surroundings at a high Reynolds number was simulated numerically by a discrete vortex method. Elements of injected fluid and surrounding fluid were marked by different colors, and their motion was visualized. Observation of fluid motion inside and outside the jet provided new insights on behavior inherent to the transient jet : 1) the elements of fluid injected at the initial stage of injection are distributed in the peripheral region of spray, and 2) in the spray tip region, the surrounding fluid is only slightly entrained into a jet because the surrounding fluid is pushed outward by a pair of large vortices.

    To measure the fuel vapor concentration in an unsteady evaporating spray, the exciplex-forming method, which produces spectrally separated fluorescence from the liquid and vapor phase, was applied in this study. Two experiments were conducted to investigate the qualitative and quantitative applicability of the technique in a high-temperature and high-pressure atmosphere during the fuel injection period. In one experiment, we examined the thermal decomposition of TMPD (NNN' N'-tetramethyl-P-phenylene-diamine) dopant in a high-temperature and high-pressure atmosphere during a period of time shorter than 10 ms. In the other, we calibrated the relationship between fluorescence intensity and vapor concentration of TMPD at different temperatures. Then, the distributions of fuel vapor concentration in diesel sprays were measured.

    A new technique for visualizing the vapor concentration in an evaporating spray, called silicone-particle scattering imaging (S. S. I. ), was proposed. When the fuel mixture containing silicone oil as 1% mass fraction was injected into a nitrogen environment at a temperature of 640 K, the volatile base fuel in the droplets vaporized rapidly leaving behind small droplets of silicone oil suspended in the vapor-gas mixture. The residual silicone oil droplets were illuminated by a thin laser sheet, and scattered light was imaged by a still camera. A simultaneous comparison between the scattering image and the fluorescence image in a cross section of an evaporating spray showed that the residual silicone oil droplets in an evaporating spray approximately represent the fuel vapor concentration. Using the S. S. I. method, the difference between the inhomogeneous structures of evaporating and nonevaporating sprays was investigated.

    The relations were investigated experimentally between the characteristics of the non-evaporating spray and those of the corresponding flame both of which were achieved in a rapid compression machine. The fuel injection pressure was changed in a range of 55 to 260MPa and other injection parameters such as orifice diameter and injection duration were changed systematically. The characteristics of the non-evaporating spray such as the Sauter mean diameter and the mean excess air ratio of the spray were measured by an image analysis technique. As for the flame the time required for a pressure rise due to combustion was taken as an index to characterize the flame. It was concluded that the mean excess air ratio of a spray is the major factor which controls the burning rate and that the high injection pressure is effective in shortening the combustion duration and reducing soot formation.

    The formation and extinction processes of soot particles in an unsteady spray flame in a quiescent atmosphere were investigated using a 2-D laser sheet technique. The central cross section of a flame was illuminated twice in a short time interval by laser sheets from a double-pulsed YAG laser, and two images of scattered light from soot particles were taken by two different intensified gated cameras. The velocity vectors of soot clouds at various locations in the sooting regions were estimated using the spatial cross correlation between two images. The results of the temporal and spatial variation of velocity and scattering intensity in the evolving soot clusters made it clear that soot is mainly formed in the periphery of the flame tip where the air entrainment is less and the temperature favors soot formation.
