    In this study, I have developed a new broad bandwidth, high-resolution molecular spectroscopic technique. The present method relies on high-precision real-time imaging of molecular rotational and vibrational wave packet dynamics. High-resolution spectra can be obtained as Fourie transform of observed molecular movie. I have developed a new ion imaging apparatus for this purpose. I have applied our method to van der Waals molecular clusters, and succeeded in measuring high-resolution rotational and vibrational spectra for the first time.

    Charged-particle imaging for gas-phase molecular systems is one of the powerful tools to study molecular dynamics of interest. In a typical imaging method, however, there have been several dynamics which cannot be observed due to experimental limitations. In this study, to overcome difficulties in existing methods, we developed a new spatial slice imaging apparatus. In our method, only photoelectrons/ions in the polarization plane of laser pulses are directly selected by a mechanical slit and then imaged. We applied our method to laser-driven rotational wavepacket, and (the square of) rotational wavefunctions in electronic exited state molecules. In the observed image, wave, quantum nature of dynamics can be clearly seen. We believe our method opened a new way to probe the molecular dynamics.

    We have developed a new experimental procedure, which combines the coherent control by ultrashort pulse excitation with the ion imaging method, and applied it to the study on creation and observation of intermolecular and rotational wave packets of nitrogen molecule dimer, of which little information has been reported so far. This achievement can be regarded as the establishment of a new measurement technology named “high-resolution spectroscopy in time-domain.” We have also determined the binding energies of several clusters composed with benzene and a few number of hydrogen (and deuterium) molecules by implementing mass-selected two-color two-photon ionization. This is the first experimental evaluation of the separation of the binding energies between two different spin isomers.

    The purpose of this study is to understand the details of low frequency structural dynamic of molecular system via clear observations of intermolecular interaction dynamics. For this, we developed a method to selectively initiate such a low frequency dynamics and a new apparatus for real-time imaging of molecular cluster dynamics. With the use of our new approach, we succeeded in detecting ion images of molecular clusters and in tracking vibrational and rotational dynamics for the first time.

    1.超高速分子ダイナミクスの高解像度観測に向けた新規イメージング法の開発
    気相分子系ダイナミクスの強力な可視化法である、荷電粒子イメージング法に対して、独自の視点に基づく観測原理を導入し、高分解能かつ高スループットの画像観測装置を設計・開発した。既存の2次元計測では、系に軸対称性がない場合の分布算出が不可能であった。本研究では、そのような困難を取り除くため、空間断層画像化法を組み込み、さらに精密スリットの製作によって分解能の向上を図った。
    2.実時間イメージングを用いた分子クラスターの低振動ダイナミクス観測
    新規イメージング法を分子クラスター種に適用することで、微弱なクラスター由来のイオン信号の検出に成功した。ダイナミクス研究については、地球大気で重要性が指摘されているにも関わらず研究例が少ない窒素多量体を対象とし、フェムト秒レーザー照射による、ラマン活性な低振動の回転、振動モードのコヒーレント励起を行った。誘起したダイナミクスをフェムト秒の時間分解能で画像観測することで、振動、回転周期の直接測定に成功した。得られた情報から、これまで測定困難だった双極子をもたない多量体の構造とダイナミクスの理解が可能となる。

    The ultimate purpose of this study was real-time observations of hydrogen bond dynamics such as stretchings, dissociations, and rearrangements. I succeeded in tuning intermolecular vibration dynamics of hydrated clusters using so-called messenger-mediated cooling technique. In addition, for real-time observation of molecular dynamics, I designed a femtosecond time-resolved ion/electron imaging setup utilizing my unique concept. I hope these achievements stimulate further studies of molecular dynamics.

    This project has aimed to establish the experimental reconstruction of wave functions pertinent to the degrees of motion characteristic to molecules, i.e., vibration and rotation, and to develop the control technology for creating molecular quantum states as designed. We have made the following achievements: (1) construction of an ion-imaging setup with new configuration and successful application to real-time trucking of propagation of unidirectionaly rotating wave packets, (2) proposal of a new coherent population transfer method based on non-resonant stimulated Raman excitation with frequency-chirped pulses and development of a novel nanosecond pulsed light source to realize the new method, and (3) detailed examination of intermolecular motion in clusters with benzene and hydrogen molecules by adopting high-resolution electronic spectroscopy.

    本研究は数十から数百の水分子がつくる、大規模な水素結合ネットワークに対して分光実験を成功させ、そのスペクトルから構造を考察、解明することを目的としている。平成22年度の研究では、最終目的としていた巨大サイズプロトン付加水クラスター200量体までの赤外分光実験に成功し、水分子の配位数やネットワークの環構造という観点からネットワーク構造の描像を考察した。この成果は、水のネットワーク構造という、極めて身近かつ重要な課題に対し、これまでになかった切り口からの情報を与えるものである。また、数百分子からなるきわめて複雑な系においても、分子レベルの構造情報を引き出せることを示した点は大きなbreakthroughであり、ボトムアップ的分子科学における重要な意義がある。さらに、水の取りえる多様なネットワーク構造それぞれの存在比がどのように変わっていくか、また、高エネルギーの光子や粒子の入射によって水のネットワークがどう変わるかといった問題に、10分子程度からなる水クラスターを対象とした赤外分光からアプローチした。それにより、2つの異性体が存在する系において、希ガス付加のような微弱な摂動のみでも両者の存在比は大きくことなることを観測した。また、ラジカルカチオン状態の水クラスター内において、OHラジカルが生成され、それが正電荷から乖離していくことを解明した。特に後者の結果は、放射線治療や核施設での冷却水の反応といった重要な応用を含む、「水中の放射線科学」の詳細な理解につながると期待される。
