    Abstract

    Chirality is a manifestation of the asymmetry inherent in nature. It has been defined as the symmetry breaking of the parity of static objects, and the definition was extended to dynamic motion such that true and false chiralities were distinguished. Recently, rotating, yet not propagating, atomic motions were predicted and observed in two-dimensional materials, and they were referred to as ‘chiral phonons’. A natural development would be the discovery of truly chiral phonons that propagate while rotating in three-dimensional materials. Here we used circularly polarized Raman scattering and first-principles calculations to identify truly chiral phonons in chiral bulk crystals. This approach enabled us to determine the chirality of a crystal in a non-contact and non-destructive manner. In addition, we demonstrated that the law of the conservation of pseudo-angular momentum holds between circularly polarized photons and chiral phonons. These findings are expected to help develop ways for transferring the pseudo-angular momentum from photons to electron spins via propagating chiral phonons in opto-phononic-spintronic devices.

    We theoretically study current-induced orbital magnetization in a chiral crystal, an orbital version of the Edelstein effect, using a simple tight-binding model of helical crystals. The induced magnetizations are opposite for right-handed and left-handed helices. We propose an analogy between the current-induced orbital magnetization and an Ampere field in a solenoid in classical electrodynamics. In order to quantify this effect, we define a dimensionless parameter from the response coefficient relating a current density with an orbital magnetization. This dimensionless parameter can be regarded as a number of turns within a unit cell when the crystal is regarded as a solenoid, and it represents how “chiral” the crystal is. We show that a Weyl semimetal with all the Weyl nodes close to the Fermi energy can have a large value of this dimensionless parameter, which can exceed that of a classical solenoid.

    We have shown by micromagnetic simulation that the wavelength of the spin wave (SW) is modulated when the SW propagates across a step between two ferromagnetic films with different thicknesses. Since the wavelength of the SW depends on the film thickness, the thickness difference works as the different medium in Snell's law. The wavelength modulation obtained by the simulation showed a good agreement with Snell's law.

    We analyze a common feature of a nontrivial fractional flux periodicity in two-dimensional systems. We demonstrate that an addition of fractional flux can be absorbed into re-parameterization of quantum numbers. For an exact fractional periodicity, all the electronic states undergo the re-parameterization, whereas for an approximate periodicity valid in a large system, only the states near the Fermi level are involved in the re-parameterization.

    絶対零度に近付くと、異常ホール効果については各種の散乱機構が効かなくなってきてかわりにカイラリティによる寄与が顕著になると予想される。これによって、R_2Mo_2O_7(R=Nd, Sm, Gd)での、低温で増大する異常ホール効果を説明できる。こうしたカイラリティによる異常ホール効果は、幾何学的フラストレーションのある系に特徴的に見られると考えられる。

    In our previous work we predicted that in chiral crystals, a current induces an orbital magnetization in either parallel or antiparallel directions, and we call this phenomenon chiral transport. In this project, we introduced a parameter representing how chiral the transport in the crystal is, and we showed that it can be enhanced by one or two orders of magnitude compared with classical solenoids. In addition, we constructed a theory of this current-induced orbital magnetization in a broader class of metals, such as polar metals, two-dimensional thin films without inversion symmetry, and surfaces/interfaces of insulators, and we physically interpret this phenomenon in terms of formation of current loops. As a byproduct, we constructed a method to calculate in-plane orbital magnetization in two-dimensional systems.

    Based on international collaboration in this research field, we formed an international network among the researchers engaged in the research field of spin conversion science. We organized several international conferences including tutorial sessions on spintronics for young researchers. Moreover, in order to foster Asian young researchers specialized in spintronics, we have held the international school of spintronics every year during last 4 years in collaboration with Korean research institutes. This activity surely helped developing human resources who will lead the spin conversion research industrially as well as academically. Additionally, participation of young graduate students and staff members at the universities in the international collaboration bore fruit as an internationally recognized achievement.

    As the theory group in the project “nano spin-conversion science”, we theoretically predicted various new phenomena in spin conversions. In particular, we constructed theories on mechanical torque generation by spin-current relaxation, on electricity generation in a liquid via spin current, on spin conversion and spin transport via susceptibility, on shift current by electromagnons in multiferroics, on nonreciprocal transport of phonons, on spin conversions in YIG and related materials, on generation of phonon angular momentum and its conversions to spins, and on spin structure and orbital angular momentum in chiral crystals. We also closely collaborate with experimental groups in the same project and provided them with proposals of experimental setups and interpretation of the experimental data.

    The steering committee led collaborative research between 5 research groups. We demonstrated that the spin conversion is a universal principle based on the conservation law of angular momentum, that extends to solid-liquid, solid-gas interfaces as well as solid-solid interfaces. We also showed that it is a ubiquitous phenomenon. This collaborative research project has been highly evaluated and resulted in 87 awards, including Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Commendation, i.e., 3 Young Scientists and 4 Science and Technology Awards. The member principal researchers have given 15 plenary talks, and 501 invited talks at various international conferences on spintronics. Besides, we organized three international meetings to raise the international recognition of the research field for forming a base for developing an international spin conversion collaborative research. These achievements resulted in the initiative for human resource and research development.

    We constructed general theories on phase transitions of topological materials. For example, we showed that a closing of a gap of an insulator without inversion symmetry always leads to a topological semimetal. We also constructed a theory on superlattices of topological semimetals, and a theory on surface-state dispersions of Weyl semimetals. We also proposed various new topological materials, such as tellurium at high pressure as a Weyl semimetal, and calcium at high pressure as a nodal-line semimetal. We also unveiled new physical phenomena of topological materials. We proposed a concept of interfacial symmetries and revealed appearance of novel interfacial states. We also showed an anomalous dielectric response of bilayer graphene ribbons by an interlayer bias voltage.

    In this study, starting from the theoretical work proposing the resonant spin-Hall effect in two-dimensional bilayer system with spin-orbit interaction (SOI), we have tried to observe such a phenomenon. The material is a narrow-gap semiconductor hetero-junction which has a strong Rashba type SOI and fabricate multi-terminal Hall bar which has three regions, spin-injection, -diffusion and -detection, with a top gate in each. We have measured inverse spin-Hall (ISHE) voltage in a detection region in a non-local measurement configuration due to the spin diffusion flow created by spin-Hall effect in a injection region. As a result, we confirmed resonant peak in a sum of voltages from top- and side-probes, indicating the existence of the ISHE signal, although the final conclusion is not yet obtained. We also studied theoretical aspects of this problem.

    金属表面に2次元的に周期的凹凸を作ったプラズモニック結晶について、凹凸が小さいとして摂動的に取り入れ、トポロジカルモードの有無を理論的に探索する研究を行った。計算手法については、前年度の1次元の場合に構築した方法を発展されたものであり、結果についてもかなりの類似点が見られる。本年度は特に三角格子状に凹凸がある場合について、エルミート固有値問題として定式化した。エルミート固有値問題としての定式化は本研究が初めてであり、ベリー曲率の計算にはこうした定式化が必須である。K,K’点上でのモードは、凹凸がない場合は3つの平面波が3重縮退しているが、凹凸によりそれらが混成する。それにより2重縮退と縮退の無いモードに分かれることを摂動論の範囲で見いだした。また2重縮退しているモードは、ディラックコーンを形成していることを見いだし、それが群論で予想されるものと一致することを確認した。そのディラックコーンの速度は、平坦な金属表面でのプラズモンの速度の半分であることが分かった。またここで磁場を入れるなどして時間反転対称性を崩すと、ディラックコーンの頂点にギャップが開くことを示し、さらにギャップの下のモードのチャーン数が+1ないし-1になることを見いだした。これは量子ホール状態と同様のカイラルエッジモードがギャップ中にできることを示している。これは金属球を蜂の巣格子状に並べた場合のプラズモンモードがトポロジカルになるという先行研究とちょうど相補的な結果であり、重要な結果である。
    またこれらの結果を有限要素法によるシミュレーションソフトにより確かめた。K,K’点でのディラックコーン生成やその速度について上記の計算結果を確かめた。さらに磁場がある場合についてもディラックコーン頂点にギャップが開くことを定性的に確かめた。

    We found that metallic 1D states on dislocations in three-dimensional topological insulators enhance the thermoelectric figure of merit at low temperature. We also found that the interface states between two topological insulators depends on the chiralities of surface Dirac cones. In particular, when the “interfacial symmetry” is preserved at the interface, we find that the band structure of the interface states closes its gap on a loop, which is unexpected for usual interface states. Finally, we studied the Weyl semimetals from the viewpoint of the topology. We calculated the general form of the band dispersion of its surface Fermi arcs, and the change of the Fermi arcs upon change of some parameter, and their dependence on the surface terminations.

    This project promotes fundamental research on dynamics of electron wavepackets in semiconductor quantum structures by extending the transport studies on semiconductor quantum dots, quantum Hall effect, and spin electronics. We have successfully revealed novel phenomena with coherent effects, electron correlations, non-equilibrium states, and non-linear effects in the dynamics of wavepackets for electrons and electron spins as well as their collective modes like plasmons and magnons.

    As a representative example of the manipulation of spins by photons, we studied theoretically the photo-induced magnetic phase transition, i.e., the transition between the antiferromagnetic insulator and ferromagnetic metal, in terms of the quantum simulation. We have revealed several new phenomena such as the various space-time pattern formation, multi-particle-hole pair generation, and irreversibility.
    We also studied the electronic states near the impurity in Au host metal by the first-principles band structure calculation and quantum Monte Carlo simulation, and have revealed that the orbital-dependent Kondo effect leads via the skew scattering the huge spin Hall angle. This result is consistent with the experiments.

    We calculate thermoelectric properties of the topological insulators. For two-dimensional topological insulators, as the temperature is lowered, the edge-state transport becomes dominant over the bulk transport. We also obtain universal phase diagrams describing the phase transitions between the topological and ordinary insulators. Lastly, we calculate the spin Hall conductivity for platinum by first-principle methods, and show that the giant spin Hall effect in platinum is caused by the band crossings near the Fermi energy.

    量子スピンホール相を示す物質を、半金属ビスマスの関連物質を中心に探索した。この相は非磁性絶縁体のうちでZ_2トポロジカルナンバーが奇数であるものを探せばよい。我々は以前、1-bilayer(111)ビスマス薄膜が量子スピンホール相を示すという予想を行ったが、これは非常に単純化された模型に基づいており、実際の実験と関係付けるためには物質に即した第一原理計算が必要である。このため今年度は第一原理計算の助けを借りて精密な計算を行った。ビスマス薄膜のうち絶縁性をしめすのは(i)(111)1-bilayer薄膜、(ii){012}2-monolayer薄膜の2種であり、これらについて計算をした結果、(i)は量子スピンホール相となるが、(ii)はそうでなく通常の絶縁相であることが分かった。なお(ii)の場合は空間反転対称性がない結晶構造のため、相を同定するためのZ_2トポロジカルナンバーの計算が厄介である。これについてはいくつかの等価な計算式が知られているが、実際数値計算をしようとすると複数の方法の間に優劣が生じる。この点については格子ゲージ理論から提唱された計算の枠組みが知られており、試行錯誤の結果この計算法が非常にうまくいき、短時間で信頼できる結果が出せることが分かった。
    またこれらの系でのエッジ状態の計算も行い、エッジ状態の時間反転対の個数が(i), (ii)でそれぞれ奇数、偶数となり上記の相の分類と一致することを確かめた。これらのエッジ状態は、理論的に予測されているとおりスピン偏極している。スピン偏極の向きはほぼ薄膜面に垂直であるが、10-20%程度薄膜面の法線方向から傾いている。この結果は良質の薄膜が作成できれば実証可能であると考えられる。

    電場でスピン流を誘起する効果(スピンホール効果)について、本年度は特に量子スピンホール相に着目し研究した。量子スピンホール相とはトポロジカル秩序の一種で、非磁性絶縁体であるが非自明なトポロジカル数を持ち、不純物等に対して安定な表面状態を持つ。こうした相は理論的に提唱されたものの、実験と関連づけられる系はまだないため、その候補となる物質探索を行った。前年度研究代表者が発見したように、絶縁体でのスピンホール効果は帯磁率と関連づけられるため、反磁性帯磁率の大きいビスマスについて、薄膜の場合にトポロジカル数の計算やバンド計算を行い、2次元系では量子スピンホール相になることを提案した。3次元での表面状態等の実験との比較を行い、半金属ビスマス、アンチモンやそれらの合金が量子スピンホール相の候補となることを理論的に提案した。本結果を実験研究者や第一原理研究者へと提案し、実験的検証に向け研究を進めている。
    上記とも関連して電荷のポンピングの研究も行った。異常ホール効果やスピンホール効果と、電荷のポンピングとは一見全く異なっているが、理論的な枠組み(ベリー位相の物理)は類似しており同様の方法論を使うことができる。特に今年度は不純物の多い1次元系について、ベリー位相によるトポロジーの効果が、(不純物の存在下でも)電荷ポンピングに強く影響することを実証した。
    また光でも同様の現象が研究代表者らにより前年度に予言された。この光のベリー位相の物理について、今年度は精密な定式化を行い、媒質界面やフォトニック結晶内での光線のシフトを計算した。またX線についても、ベリー位相の効果が顕著になる例を発見した。それは歪んだ結晶中をX線波束が進む場合に、歪みの大きさよりも何桁も大きく波束がシフトするというものであり、これは最近実験的に観測されつつある。

    マンガン酸化物にみられる巨大磁気抵抗を、強磁性相と電荷-軌道秩序相との競合による臨界現象であるという観点からとらえて、理論的な予言を行い実験と比較した。すなわち、バンド幅および温度を変化させて出来る相図での二重臨界点付近で揺らぎが増大して、それが磁場に対する巨大応答になるということである。特に理論の予言どおり、さまざまなバンド幅や温度での磁化曲線が、アロットプロットの後に一つの普遍的な曲線によく一致し、我々の理論の妥当性をよく示している。この論文は現在投稿中である。
    また運動量空間でのゲージ場が超伝導のギャップ関数に大きな影響を与えることを一般的に示した。このゲージ場は波動関数の位相の自由度に由来していて、量子ホール効果や異常ホール効果に寄与を与えることが知られているが、こうした非自明なゲージ場の構造をもつ物質が超伝導転移すると、ギャップ関数にも非自明なトポロジー構造が現れる。その帰結として、バンド構造によっては、引力相互作用の詳細によらずギャップ関数にポイントノードが出て、またギャップ関数がフェルミ面上で単一連続関数で表せないといった状況が起こる。これは最近次々に発見されている磁性超伝導体において、重要な役割を果たすと考えられる。
    最後に、CaB_6にLaなどの不純物を少量ドープしたときに見られる特異な高温強磁性についての理論を、昨年に続いて発展させた。この物質ではバンド構造から、励起子凝縮が起こって可能性が示唆されているが、これを仮定してギンツブルグ・ランダウ理論を展開して、予想される磁気的・光学的性質を予言した。特に今年度はこの磁気的・光学的性質についての理論を発展させた。この物質の性質については現在も論争が続いており、その論争に決着をつける意味でこうした予言とその実証は重要である。
