    2019年9月11日(水), 於 : キャンパスプラザ京都 第1講義室草津白根山では, 近年の火山活動が湯釜火口周辺に限定されていた。2014年からは, 湯釜火口周辺で活動が高まり, 山体の膨張を伴う地震活動, 熱活動, 火山ガス成分の変化が観測され, 2年後には活動が終息した。一方で, 1500年間活動のなかった本白根山鏡池北火口で, 2018年1月23日に顕著な前駆的活動を伴わない水蒸気噴火が発生し, 人的な被害が生じた。この噴火を受けて2018年度, 2019年度に, 地震学・測地学・地球電磁気学・地球化学・地質学に渡る科研費研究が実施された。噴火に先立って前兆的な現象の有無について, それぞれの分野で検討がなされた。また水蒸気噴火後にマグマ噴火への移行の可能性もありモニタリング研究を継続したが, 現状では, 本白根火山鏡池北火口の再活動の兆しは見当たらない。一方, 草津白根山湯釜火口付近は, 2018年4月, 同9月, 2019年5月に傾斜変動を伴う地震活動が発生し, 再び活動的になってきている。

    平成30年9月18日(火), 於 : 京都大学宇治おうばくプラザきはだホール2018年1月23日10時02分に草津白根山を構成する3山体(白根山・逢ノ峰・本白根山)の一つである本白根山鏡池北火口で1500年ぶりの噴火が発生し, 噴石により人的な被害が発生した。この噴火は顕著な前駆的活動を伴わない水蒸気噴火であった。近年の草津白根火山では, 白根山湯釜水釜火口を中心とする水蒸気噴火活動が顕著で, 火山観測は白根山に集中している。一方で, 今回噴火した本白根山では, これまでの最新の噴火が鏡池北火口での1500年前のマグマ噴火であって, 近年, 鏡池北火口付近には顕著な地熱活動は記録されていない。今回の突発的な噴火を受けて, 以下の3点を明らかにするために総合調査を行った。(1)顕著な前駆的な活動がない水蒸気噴火プロセスの解明(2)今後の火山活動の推移の予測, 特にマグマが噴出する可能性の予測(3)融雪泥流発生リスクの評価。これらの研究のために, 地震観測, 地盤変動観測, 熱観測, 噴出物観測, 地球化学観測, 融雪泥流評価を実施した。これまでの研究成果について報告する。

    We conducted magnetotelluric surveys on the eastern flank of Usu Volcano. Analyses of the induction vector and 2-D resistivity inversion along the NNE-SSW direction have been performed. The overall structure of this area is characterized by horizontally stratified resistivity of H-L-H-L from surface to depths. A distinct low-resistivity body lies beneath the Showa-Shinzan lava dome at 2-3 km deep, below which an isolated high-resistivity body has been estimated.

    In the 2000 eruption of Usu volcano, it is widely believed that magmatic intrusion has reached the shallow subsurface to produce significant ground deformation. We performed a magnetotelluric survey over this area aiming for prospecting the intruded magma. The resistivity section exhibits a High-Low-High three-layered structure. The surface layer with a resistivity around 100 Ωm is likely to correspond with the lower Pleistocene andesite. The second layer is very conductive (0.1 to 1 Ωm), thinning and shallowing in the middle. It is difficult to explain such a low resistivity by anything but the Neogene units containing conductive clay minerals with high salinity ground water. Below it the resistivity gradually increases. The top middle part of the third layer shows the resistivities around 10 Ωm. It looks that this part is pushing the second layer upwards. We investigated whether this block is explainable by intruded magma or not from a viewpoint of the resistivity values. We at first calculated the resistivities of rhyolitic melt by using Gaillard (2004) 's model. The melt resistivities are in a range from 1 to 10 Ωm for 800 to 600 ℃. Secondly, we examined the partial melt by using the MBL model of Schilling et al. (1997). Given that the resistivities of melt and solid are 1 and 10,000 Ωm, respectively, the melt fraction corresponding to the bulk resistivity of 10 Ωm should be 15 vol%. Higher melt resistivity requires a larger melt fraction. The discussion above predicts that the bulk resistivity of the intruded magma will increase by some orders of magnitude in the course of cooling and solidification and that this process can be monitored by MT repeat measurements.

    Shallow subsurface structure of Shirane pyrocrastic cone, Kusatsu-Shirane Volcano is discussed with Pseudo Reflection Profiling. Pseudo Reflection Profiles are obtained from a controlled source seismic experiment in September-October 2003 as a part of the Fourth Joint Observation of Kusatsu-Shirane Volcano. A significant horizon is defined through correlation of the profile with borehole logging data. The horizon is compatible with a top face of Tertiary volcanic rocks as a substratum of Kusatsu-Shirane Volcano and is estimated at 1700 m a. s. l. in the craters. The horizon strikes NNE-SSW direction and dips eastward. Its dipping is not uniform and there is a bench zone beneath the craters which strikes NNE-SSW direction. Seismicity beneath Mizugama crater is concentrated and the active magnetization region locates beneath the horizon. Other clear reflection events within the substratum are also observed in the profiles but their geological correlation is not defined. One of deeper horizon at 1000m a. s. l. may correlate a sort of density contrast in Tertiary volcanics layer. Seismicity along the traverse line tends to concentrate under the deeper horizon beneath Yugama crater. The density contrast may constrain seismicity beneath the crater.

    Authorship:Principal investigator 

    壊滅的な被害をもたらしたカフラマンマラシュ地震(マグニチュード7.8と7.6)は、東アナトリア断層系で発生した。本研究では、マグネトテルリック(MT)法と呼ばれる地球電磁気学的な地下探査手法を用いて、震源地周辺の地下流体の分布を解明する。
    MT法では自然電磁場の観測から、震源域の比抵抗構造を解析することができる。比抵抗は流体の分布や連結性に敏感であるため、地震発生プロセスを制約する流体分布を可視化することに通ずる。震源域の下方に流体溜まりがあって、その流体が震源域に流入して大地震を引き起こしたと仮定し、それを検証する。
    本研究で得られる比抵抗構造は、震源域の地殻流体の時間変動研究のベースラインを提供することにもなる。

    An electromagnetic monitoring system using precisely controlled frequency comb signals was constructed and was demonstrated at Kusatsu-Shirane volcano. Two transmitter dipoles were installed at the southern foot of the volcano, and electromagnetic receivers were placed around the peak. The distances between the transmitters and receivers are approximately 5 km. The current dipoles were in two directions one in the east-west direction and the other in the north-south direction, transmitting sine waves consisting of frequency sets with logarithmic equal intervals in the frequency range of 0.02 Hz to 4.6 Hz. By synchronising the function generator with a 10 MHz GPS signal, the transmitted signal could be repeated with high accuracy over a long period of time. The stacking method using the inverse of the noise as weights was found to be effective in extracting weak repetitive signal components from the received signals, and the response functions could be easily obtained.

    In this study, we conducted observational studies on a plate boundary fault (Bolu-Gerede segment, North Anatolian Fault Zone, Turkey) and an inland active fault (Atotsugawa Fault, Japan), where slip diversity is observed, to determine whether heterogeneity in the electrical resistivity structure is found in the subsurface corresponding to the diversity, and if so, whether it is common. The purpose of this observational study is to clarify whether heterogeneity in the subsurface electrical resistivity structure is observed in response to the diversity of the fault segments. We obtained broadband MT data at 44 sites around the Atotsugawa Fault and 36 sites around the North Anatolian Fault Zone. Along the Atotsugawa Fault, heterogeneity of resistivity structures corresponding to differences in seismic activity and surface displacement velocity fields was observed.

    Motoshirane volcano had phreatic eruption on January 23, 2018 with casualties. This study aimed at the followings: (1) elucidating the eruption mechanism, (2) monitoring and prediction of on-going volcanic activity and (3) assessment of potential lahar. Despite the volcanic tremor two minutes prior to the eruption, we could not find significant precursory seismic activity. We observed temporal tilt changes at the borehole stations and they are explained by a crack inflation and deflation. We observed no anomalous surface temperature at the new vent in March, 2018, however, from the aeromagnetic survey, the temperature of the regional volcanic area at depth seems elevated over the years. The total ejected mass was estimated as 36,000 tons which is 1/10 of that of 2014 Mt. Ontake eruption. From the chemical analyses of the ash, the ejected gas has different origin from known fumaroles. We also made risk assessment of lahar.

    Regarding geofluid distribution, flow and properties in the Japanese Islands, we estimated the distribution of geofluid by experiments and observational studies on seismic velocity-electrical conductivity of rock-fluid system, and clarified that the fluid dehydrated from the subducted slab ascends to the earth surface by geophysical-geochemical observation and numerical simulation. Geochemical observations and numerical simulations revealed that these deep fluids are high-salt and high 3He / 4He fluids represented by Arima-type saltwater, and that they are distributed along the Arima area and the Median Tectonic Line in the Kii Peninsula. The flux of deep fluid in the fault zone was estimated through physical measurement of flow rate and water pressure and measurement of chemical and isotopic composition.

    Recent geodetic observations detect recurrent slow slip events (SSEs), which occurred beneath the Bungo Channel and southwest Shikoku Island, with interval of approximately 6 years. In order to reveal a large-scale three-dimensional resistivity structure around this SSEs region, we carried out wideband magnetotelluric (MT) surveys around the western part of Shikoku Island. Using obtained MT responses, we constructed a three-dimensional resistivity model around the eastern half of SSE region. We inverted the impedance tensor and the vertical magnetic transfer function. The main features of the three-dimensional model are moderate conductive zone in the central part of SSEs with surrounding conductor at the edge of SSEs along the upper boundary of the Philippine Sea slab, and a strong conductor beneath SSEs.
    We have also established a permanent long-term MT monitoring network that aims to detect temporal changes of resistivity structure during SSE cycle.

    We conducted the resistivity surveys, the ground deformation analysis of InSAR images, the thermal observation, and the geochemical analysis of hot-spring waters in the Jigokudani valley of Tateyama volcano, where phreatic eruptions repeatedly occurred in the past and the volcanic activity has been increasing. These analyses revealed a typical cap structure consisting of near-surface cap rock overlying a gas reservoir, which has been detected in many volcanoes known to undergo repeated phreatic eruptions. We confirmed that the shallow subsurface of the Jigokudani Valley is in the pressurized and high-temperature state. In addition, we clarified that all hot springs are formed by the mixing of magmatic fluid and local meteoric water and have a common parent fluid that differentiates into three types in the shallow hydrothermal system. From these findings, we consider that the shallow ground of Jigokudani Valley is satisfying the requirements for causing a phreatic eruption.

    We have developed a monitoring system for phreatic eruption environment (1) with electromagnetic induction method, which images resistivity model and (2) with magnetic total force stations, which detects the temporal changes of temperature at depth. Regarding the electromagnetic induction methods, we developed a coincident loop system, where transmitting and receiving loops with radius of 30m are located at the same location. Regarding the magnetic total forces, our measurements of four stations at Kusatsu-Shirane volcano found decreasing the magnetization of the volcanic edifice, which means that the volcanic body is cooling, although surface thermal areas are expanding at the Yugama crater. We interpret that the volcano is effectively releasing heat from the surface, but the volcano at 500m depth is cooling.

    From the detailed magnetotelluric observations around the Naruko volcano in the central NE Japan arc, we analyzed three-dimensional resistivity structure of the crust and the upper mantle. We found sub-vertical conductors beneath active volcanoes, Naruko and Onikobe, which imply existence of saline fluid reservoir. In the upper mantle, we imaged a conductor on top of the down-going plate. The conductor extends towards the Moho under the backbone ranges. We also found that it also has a branch toward west beneath volcanoes along the Japan Sea. From the experimental resistivity measurements of a fluid bearing rocks under lower crustal conditions, we found that those crustal conductors, found by magnetotelluric measurements, need high salinity fluids.

    In order to clarify the corresponding electrical resistivity structure to the assumed magma reservoir and to the supply paths to Sakurajima volcano and to the submarine volcano, we have conducted the magnetotelluric (MT) measurement mainly along two traverse lines in the direction of WNW-ESE crossing the Aira caldera since 2009. The MT data at 44 sites in total, including 16 seafloor sites, were obtained for the last four years. As a result of 2-D and3-D inversions, a high conductive region extending from the lower crust along the Kagoshima graben was found from the central part of the caldera to the eastern part. This conductor is possibly the structure relevant to the magma supply system.

    Based on simultaneous observations of ground velocity and electromagnetic field, we have investigated the seismic dynamo effect, in which temporal variations of electromagnetic field associated with ground velocity are caused by cyclotron motion of ions contained in groundwater under the Earth's magnetic field. Circularly polarized electric field, detection of electric field earlier than arrival of seismic waves, and peak frequencies of the transfer function between ground velocity(input) and electric field(output) at cyclotron frequencies for ions in groundwater strongly support the seismic dynamo effect.

    トルコ国を東西に横断する長大な北アナトリア断層においては、これまで巨大地震が西方に移動しながら発生している。1999年イズミット地震の次の来るべき地震は、マルマラ海で起こると推定されているが、その破壊規模を推定するには海底の断層の構造を知る必要がある。そのために、海底電磁気観測を行い、断層の3次元的な不均質構造を解明することが本研究の目的である。これまで、マルマラ海西部の断層セグメント中央部および、マルマラ海中央部の断層セグメントの境界をそれぞれ横切る測線を設定して観測点をそれぞれ5か所配置し、各観測点で1カ月弱の電磁場データを取得してきている。
    本格的な3次元解析に先立って、海底における2次元構造による応答について考察を行った。TMモード(磁場が構造の走行方向に存在するモード)の応答は、鉛直状の海底地形は電場の振幅に影響するが、電場の位相には影響しにくいことが分かった。一方TEモード(電場が構造の走行方向に存在するモード)では、鉛直状の海底地形の麓に電流が集中し、それを取り巻く2次的な磁場ができる。この2次的な磁場は1次的な磁場とコンパラな強度を持ち、かつ海底において1次磁場と逆位相になるので、トータルの磁場が非常に大きな影響を受けることが分かった。また、実際のマルマラ海の水深データを用いて3次元応答と計算し、それと2次元応答との比較を行った。この結果、2次元構造に対するTMモードと、3次元応答がよい一致をすることを確認した。これをもとに観測データを、TMモードのみを用いた2次元モデルで解析することとした。解析の結果、これまでIzmit周辺で知られている断層に関係した上部マントルの構造が、マルマラ海の東部の海底下でもつながっていることが分かった。

    We installed the two telluric observation sites, the dipole spans of which are about 1 km, in the central part of Australian Continent in order to elucidate reference electrical conductivity profile in continental upper mantle. The electrical conductivity profile analyzed using the obtained data shows more resistive than the Canadian Shield's result. We also developed a procedure in which electrical conductivity profile could be calculated from arbitral chemical composition among the principal five elements (Ca, Fe, Mg, Al, Si)and from the laboratory experimental data of the mineral conductivity. Standard chemical composition model in continental upper mantle gave more conductive profile than the observed one through the procedure. The result reveals that standard chemical composition and electrical conductivity profile in continental upper mantle is not consistent with each other.

    活動的な火山の火口直下の状態を、比抵抗を通して監視するシステム(VOLCANO-LOOP)を試作する。とくに、水蒸気爆発場における蒸気・熱水系の挙動に注目する。それは蒸気の発生によって比抵抗が上昇することが期待されるからである。火口縁を1周する送信電流ループと受信ループをはり、火口直下に絞って電磁信号を“照射"することによって、火口直下の構造を精密に監視するシステムを試作する。火口直下は重要でありながら、従来の方法では方法論的に観測自体が困難であるが、本方法ではそれが可能になり、火山噴火予知研究のbreakthroughとなる。
    まず、実際にループに電流を流す場合のステップ応答について、層状大地を仮定して、受信ループに生ずる気電力の時系列を数値計算した。また電場の分布の時間発展についても数値計算から考察し、late timeになると、誘導電流の分布が、鉛直下方ではなく、むしろ横方向に広がっていくことを確認した。また、水蒸気爆発を起こす草津白根火山を想定したモデル計算では、温度の上昇によってモンモリロナイト粘土キャップが薄くなることが想定されるが、それが観測でも検出できるか可能性をもしれない。
    また、VOLCANO-LOOPの探査装置を作成し、試験観測を行った。

    GPS measurements have been observed two times every year at the in north Sumatra since 2007, and MT observations closing the fault. Through the surveys, co-seismic deformation over 3 m and post-seismic deformation over 80 cm horizontally and 50 cm vertically are observed.
    We discuss the fault slip model of the 2004 Sumatra Earthquake, largest slip over 20 m is estimated in upper thrust fault extending to ocean bottom from the plate boundary. This estimation shows a good consistent with 1 m uplift in Nias Island.
    From a post-seismic deformation especially uplift of 50 cm in the west coast of Banda Aceh, it is suggested large after slip would be occurred in the deeper plate boundary.
    We also discuss the fault slip model of the Sumatra fault based on the horizontal deformation deduced the post-seismic deformation from the observed deformation by mode. The creep dislocation of 3 cm/yr in the shallow part of the fault in north Aceh is suggested. Low risibility zones around the fault are detected by MT survey. It also suggested that earthquake occurrence potential is enhanced high in north Sumatra.

    We have analyzed 35 wide-band magnetotelluric data at Armutlu peninsula, where we had aftershock activity of 1999 Izmit earthquake, and found the earthquakes distribute outside of the crustal conductors. We also obtained 14 ocean-bottom magnetotelluric data in the Marmara Sea in the period range of 100-10,000 seconds. After preliminary 2d, 3d modeling, inhomogeneous resistivity structures are being revealed in relation to asperities.

    間歇泉は、火山噴火の類似として、その噴出の繰り返し間隔が短いこと、アクセスが容易であることから、火山爆発場の類似として、重要な研究対象である。本研究の目的は、比抵抗と自然電位の観測をすることによって、噴気に伴う地下水や水蒸気の流動を推定することである。研究対象は宮城県鬼首間歇泉である。噴出孔の周辺に5箇所の流電極を設置し、順次200-300mA周期4秒の交代直流(50%dutyサイクル)を注入し、23個の電位極で電位変動を24ビットのロガーで観測し、時間分解能2秒で比抵抗トモグラフィーをおこなった。
    噴出孔の金属ケーシングに電流を流した場合には、間歇泉噴出の15秒前から最大5%の見掛比抵抗の増加が観測された。一方、噴出孔から5m程度はなれた周辺で電流を流した場合には、逆に見掛比抵抗が増加する傾向が顕著で、その空間パターンは噴出孔をはさんで電流極の反対側に変動のピークをもつ。これらの挙動は、有限要素法による3次元モデル計算によって定性的に説明できることがわかった。すなわち、噴出孔直下にある空洞が、噴出15秒前から熱水と蒸気の混合したもので満たされることによって、説明できる。
    また、自然電位変動からは、流体の移動が推定される。最も顕著な自然電位変動は、噴出中ではなく、噴出後にあることがわかった。これは多孔質中を流れて供給された水が、亀裂系のリザーバーに入ることで流動電位を発生できなくなり、その境界に電荷が取り残されることによる。噴出直前には、地表付近の亀裂系に流体が上昇するために、噴気孔の側方を中心とした弱い電位異常の分布があることもわかった。

    In each year of this research project, we intensified seismic observations and advanced the analysis system, resulting in the establishment of an earthquake monitoring system in the Istanbul area, western Turkey. At present, seismic activity can be monitored on the web and also some data on major earthquakes are shown on the web, so that the data can be used for studies of earthquake generation mechanism. We have used the data for our own researches on seismic tomography and found that seismic activity becomes shallower in the earthquake source region of a big earthquake anticipated to the west of the Izmit earthquake source area. We also accumulated information on earthquake generation mechanism from waveform inversion for middle-size earthquakes, and increased our understanding of the distribution of crustal stress. As for seismicity itself, seismic activity is no very active in the earthquake source area for a big earthquake anticipated to the south of Istanbul, but it is rather active in its vicinity. Yearly data of hypocenters suggest an image of east-west active faults beneath the Marmara Sea and an image of the anticipated big earthquake has emerged. In electromagnetic studies, we made wide-band, long-period and short-period MT observations, and clarified the resistivity structure in a wide region including the Izmit earthquake source area. As a result, we found that earthquake source areas are resistive in general and highly resistive areas correspond to asperities. We also found a partial melting zone and its extension, as revealed by low resistivity zones widely existing in the lower crust and upper mantle. As for the seismic dynamo effect which we found during the Izmit earthquake, we made further studies for aftershocks associated with some major earthquakes, such as the Niigata Prefecture earthquake, which occurred recently in Japan. We could confirm the effect for earthquakes larger than magnitude 4.0, but could not detect electromagnetic signals anticipated theoretically before the arrival of seismic wave, simply because of low S/N for small earthquakes.

    Present study has aimed to elucidate the volcano-hydrological environment including the hydrothermal circulation system and to detect the intruded magma by using the geoelectrical methods. For these purposes, we made magnetotelluric observations and self-potential measurements on Usu (dacite magmatism). Miyake-jima (basaltic magmatism) and Hokkaido Komagatake (andesitic magmatism) volcanoes.
    1) The common feature of the resistivity structure is seen beneath the three volcanic edifices: The first layer (100m or so) is resistive (about 1000 ohm-m) due to the volcanic rocks and sediments. The second layer is composed of the conductive rocks (several to several tens of ohm-m), suggesting the existence of the ionized water. This layer covers the relatively resistive third layer (several hundreds of ohm-m). The third layer is assumed to be the pre-Tertiary rocks.
    2) Positive self-potential anomalies are commonly observed on summit craters (Usu, 400 mV; Miyake-jima, 800 mV; Hokkaido Komagatake, 600 mV). These anomalies can originate from the upwelling of hot groundwater warmed by the heat supplied from deep-seated magma. These findings of hydrothermal circulation are important to consider the magma cooling process.
    3) Magnetotelluric soundings on Usu revealed the relatively highly resistive body (400 ohm-m or so) beneath the summit crater. Considering the relation between the resistivity of dacite rock and temperature, and the fumarolic temperature of Usu (500〜600℃, this body is identified as the intruded magma at the time of the 1977-1978 eruptions.

    Broad-band magnetotelluric investigations were made along 3 profiles across the Hidaka and Kamuikotan metamorphic belts, old plate boundary, and the following results were obtained.
    I. Southern part of the Hidaka-Kamuikotan belts (Hidaka profile) I-1. Shallow resistivity structure is well collerated with the surface geology: the conductive Sorachi-Yezo formations ((] SY.simeq.[) 10 ohm m) and the resistive Hidaka metamorphic belt ((] SY.simeq.[) 1000 ohm m). I-2. Old oceanic plate (trapped oceanic plate in the Jurassic) was detected as a resistive basements of the Sorachi-Yezo formations. I-3. The sediment to the west of the Kamuikotan belt is significantly thicker ((] SY.simeq.[)10 km) than that of the Shibetsu profile ((] SY.simeq.[) 3 km). This difference implies that the deep foredeep is created in the southern part of the Hidaka-Kamuikotan belts by the collision of Hokkaido and the Kurile arc since the Miocene time. I-4. There is eastward dipping conductor and overriding wedge-shape resister beneath the Hidaka mountains. The dipping conductor is consistent with the seismic low velocity and low Q anomaly.
    II. Northern part of the Hidaka-Kamuikotan belts (Shibetsu profile) II-1. Resistivity structure at shallow depth is generally common with that of Hidaka profile. II-2. Beneath this profile, westward dipping conductive layer was observed, suggesting the existence of the oceanic sedimentary lyer on the Kula plate.
    III. Eastwardly extended part of the Shibetsu profile (Rubeshibe profile) Although the resistivity structure is complex even at deeper crust of this region, the structure is tend to dip eastwardly. Therefore, the Cretaceous eastward subduction of the Kula plate against the Okhotsk block can be imaged.
